While you were sleeping last night, social media marketers around the world were losing their damn minds. Why? Because last night Adam Mosseri, Head of News Feed for FB, posted a pants-peeing blog post about how Facebook is evolving within the new few weeks. He outlined the next phases of the Facebook algorithm, which is making some dramatic changes that will have a huge effect on all Pages. Within minutes, marketers went into panic mode. While it’s certainly no need for panic, there are a few things savvy business owners should know.
Boy oh boy have things ever changed from today to a year or so at this time on Instagram. At over 800 million active users, they’ve had to make changes to account for all of the new growth and activity. Overall it’s just a more saturated platform, so there are more posts fighting for space in the coveted feed. On one hand, there are over 500 million active users every day and 80% of them follow brands and businesses. On the other hand, only 6% of users are actually seeing our posts. The main takeaway? What used to work on Instagram isn’t working anymore, so it’s time to adjust your strategy.
Hashtags can be really freaking confusing right? After talking to a handful of peers, I found out that pretty much all them wanted to kind of light themselves on fire when they hear the word hashtag. I think the reason for this is that there’s so much information (and so much misinformation). It’s actually not that confusing, it’s pretty freaking easy and pretty freaking crucial to growing your Instagram, so I’m going to give it to you straight. Here’s an easy-to-understand beginner’s guide to using hashtags on Instagram.
Can I be real? In my last blog post, I felt like a total Debbie Downer. If you missed it, I spelled out my biggest mistake in biz in 2017. When I asked if you would rather hear about mistakes or successes in my Year in Review, over 95% of responders wanted to hear about mistakes (interesting, right?). But, to be honest, when I hit publish, I felt a resounding “wah-wah” echo through my home office. The other thing that you wanted to hear about, that wasn’t such a bummer, was what I’m investing in for 2018. So, here it is.
Has the end of the year got anyone else all sorts of reflective? I could (and probably will) journal, meditate, and intention set until the cows come home… but if I keep it to myself, it can only help me. If I share it with you, maybe you can swoop right past making some of the same mistakes. So let’s hop right into, shall we?
With all the daily changes to Facebook and Instagram’s algorithms, it can blow your damn mind pretty quick trying to keep up. It’s honestly a full-time job (no seriously – it’s my full-time job). Nerds like me spend far too much time gobbling up this kind of information, reading the latest articles on app updates, and networking with our industry peers trying to figure the dang thing out together. Now, I want to share it with you. Here’s what’s going on with the new changes to the Facebook algorithm.
Think of your webpage as you’re number one employee. She works for you 24/7 - she literally doesn’t take a break… AND she doesn’t drink all the Lacroix out of the company fridge. Your website non-stop performs for you. Your website is the number one way that you can make money in your sleep. Maybe for you it doesn’t feel that way right now. Maybe your website feels more like that freelancer who won’t stop showing up and you’re pretty sure he’s napping in his cubicle.
SquareSpace templates can be confusing. It’s easy to get distracted by shiny objects, example photography, really slick type and well-written headlines. We can easily get swept away in how beautiful each template is. However, this is NOT the best way to select your template. The best way to select is by covering the features and functions you need to have, rather than thinking about the stylization or the surface level design elements.
The first decision that you need to make when you create a trial site on SquareSpace is selecting your template. It’s a hard decision because they’re all visually stunning – you can quickly get swept away in the example sites and make a decision based on looks alone. Here’s the right way to select your SquareSpace template so you get a site that does everything you need it to do… AND is beautiful, as well.
Some people compare their websites to a welcome mat for their business. I don't know about you, but my welcome mat doesn't really do anything besides collects dirt and leaves – pretty much the opposite of what I want my website to do. I think of my homepage more as a cocktail party (fun, right?). It's where people wander up to when they're interested and want to know more about you. They're there to get the scoop. They are warming up to you and the idea of working with you. So, it's crucial that their first experience is a good one. Your homepage – what they see when they land on your website – really counts.
SquareSpace and Wordpress. They’re the top two Content Management Systems (CMS) and highly debated. WordPress people are hardcore WPers and those who preach the SquareSpace gospel are just as devoted. Personally, I’ve built over a handful of sites on both platforms. After almost 10 years of building and designing sites in both, I’ve committed to only one platform. Want to know my CLEAR winner? What do I use for myself, my clients, what do i recommend and why? Let’s start by talking about some of the key differences.
You started an Instagram account and you're beginning to see a little traction. You’re gaining confidence and wondering how to keep the ball rolling... how to take your business to the next level. Maybe you considered hiring a designer to create a custom logo for you, or maybe you’ve already whipped one up yourself. You’re wondering, how do I take the next step? How do I get serious about growing my business and convert my followers into customers? I’m going to be super honest with you.
Let's be real for a minute. Do you know what a hashtag is? Do you know why you use them (be honest, sister!)? Are you just throwing #Monday or #weekend on a few posts and hoping for engagement? Listen, there's no shame in that game. I did it for YEARS. Now, I know there IS a better way – a way that can get you closer to your goals a whole helluva lot faster. Hashtags can be a really incredible tool for getting new eyes on your account when used strategically. Start here.
Entrepreneurship can mean a whole lot of sacrifice and, more often that not, what gets sacrificed is wellness. On the other hand, wellness can have connotations of self indulgence and a lack of drive towards a goal. How do we balance the two? How do we chase our goals and grow our businesses while maintaining our wellness?
Instagram doesn't give you a ton of words only 30 characters in the tagline and 150 characters in your description, as well as one precious, precious clickable link to tell people exactly who you are, who you’re for, and what you’re all about. So, you got to make them count. Here are my 5 steps to getting the PERFECT Instagram bio.
Shadowban has quickly become the boogeyman being buzzed about amongst social media influencers and entrepreneurs – we don’t know exactly what it looks like, we don’t know where it’s lurking, and we assume it’s coming for us around the next corner. While the name itself is quite dramatic, don’t let this idea trip you up or distract you from using Instagram to rock your biz. If anything, it’s weeding out spam accounts to make our user experience better. We can’t hate on that, right?
If you've got your ear on the beat for social media marketing news, you know that over the past couple months Instagram pods have exploded. They're hot new thing that everyone wants to talk about, but is a little nervous to openly discuss (just adding to their mystique). Let me break down what the heck pods are, why everyone is so hush-hush about them, and why you may or may not want to join or start one.
Does Facebook make you feel like garbage? Are you noticing that you actively feel WORSE after opening your FB app? You’re not alone. I polled a group of FB users last week and the overarching statement was that they felt irritated, overwhelmed, and overall BUMMED by their experience on the app lately. I'm all about tailoring your social media to work for you, not against you, so I want to share a tip with you that has completely flipped my FB experience upside down.
This week, I've been finalizing my Social Media with Soul course content and couldn't help but reflect on what the heck we're actually doing on these platforms and how they're affecting us. A huuuuuuuuge part of social media strategy is getting your content in the NEWSFEED. On most platforms, an algorithmic ranking decides this. It feels kinda icky, right? I don't know about you, but I don't love the idea of an equation deciding what I get to see.
Have you noticed the little profile picture circles hovering at the top of your Instagram feed lately? Maybe you’ve screwed around with a Boomerang of your dog running or slapped a face filter on your selfie and called it #nomakeup. Regardless of your experience level with Instagram Stories thus far, it’s time to get down business and talk about why they’re important and why you should be using to get optimal perform out of your Instagram account (especially for business).
