Music is magic. It can transform a walk into a strut, folding the laundry into an epic dance breakdown, jogging on an elliptical into a Rocky-level pump-up. And NOW you can add a soundtrack to your Instagram stories (natively in the app!). With over 400 million people using uploading stories every day, it's important keep it spicy with new features to keep your audience interested and coming back for more. And, with the new elements Instagram is constantly adding (I’m sure you remember questions, polls, GIFs, heck – even IGTV!), it’s basically a nerd’s playground. Ready to get started with one of Instagram's most fun features? Here's everything you need to know about how to add music to your Instagram Story.

It's surprisingly super easy once you get going, but I’m going to walk you through it step-by-step to make sure you’re confident and ready to forge forward with THE best IG stories of all-time.

First, let’s take a look at what it actually looks like when someone has added music to their story.

There are currently three visual options:

  1. A white background on your music icon
  2. A transparent background on your music icon
  3. The album artwork

In this example, you’ll see #1 (middle) and #3 (right):

How to Add Music to your Instagram Story:

  1. Start a story by tapping that little camera icon in the upper left hand corner. When you do so, you'll get either your camera or if you swipe up in the center of the screen, you'll gain access to your camera roll. When you're in your camera roll, you can select a video or a photo.
  2. Tap on the sticker icon in the upper right hand corner. It’ll look like a little happy face on a post-it note.
  3. Now, select music (surprise, surprise).
  4. Here, you can search all the songs that are in the library by typing in the search bar.
  5. Sift through your options! You can hear a sample by clicking the play button to the right of the song title. When you’ve got the right one, just click on it.
  6. Now, you’ll be able to scroll left and right to select the exact snippet of the song you’d like to play during your story. Once you’ve got the right part, hit DONE.
  7. You’ll be taken back to my story where you can select which visual you’d like. You can either have a white background, a transparent background, or the album cover.
  8. Once you choose one of those, you can play with it just like any other Instagram story element. With your two fingers, you can expand, shrink, move, and tilt to your hearts content.
